Review - Flash Sale: New School and Neo Traditional Tattoo Coloring Book by Marie Willms
Marie Willms is a professional tattoo artist based out of rural Minnesota. Her book, Flash Sale, is a curated collection of 26 single sided drawing produced during her apprenticeship at The Lacquered Dagger tattoo studio. It features a variety of small to mid-sized character focused designs, several pages of flash designs and a variety of non-traditional filler.
This is not your typical coloring book. Filled with playful cartoonish characters and traditional objects, this book provides an exciting glimpse into the world of New School and Neo Traditional Tattoo designs. Our colorists, not being familiar with this type of tattoo art, didn’t understand the wild mix of random designs. However, because of the wide variety of designs that this book offers, they all found pages that they enjoyed. Below are some of the completed pages.

Colorist, Kimberly Egberts, used Prismacolor Premier Pencils, Faber-Castell Black Edition, Ecoline Brush Pens, Sakura Gelly Roll Moonlight Gel Pens, and Jaxell soft pastels for the above pages. She said that “Even though the shapes were enjoyable and easy to color, I found it hard to color multiple elements of the same without losing concentration. I felt inspired when I started the bug page and I had fun coloring both him and his human.”

These pages were colored by Cher Reneé, with Faber-Castell pencils, Prisma Premiere pencils, white Pasco marker, Ohuhu markers, intense ink, and and Versa Magic multi-surface chalk ink. When asked about coloring these pages, Cher said “I found this to be interesting and easy coloring. He is one of those fellows that needed love” about the green goblin page above.

Ilona Szajnicka used this page (above left) to experiment with her new with Derwent Inktense pencils and waterbrush. Meanwhile, Linda Woltil Allison used her signature coloring mix of Prismacolor Premier, CastleArts, Koh-I-Noor and Phoenixcolor pencils with LePlumme dual tip brush/fineliners for her pages (above middle and right.)

Randi Jameson, who colored the pages above, said, “the images were nicely drawn. Challenge level I would put to easy.” She used Bic markers Prismacolor pencils and moonlight gelly rolls.
